A Polar Bear Wedding Announcement for Rebecca and Fraser

Rebecca and Fraser are getting married! It’s true. Our daughter and her lifelong friend Fraser Issac have decided to throw their hats into the ring and tie the knot!

Rebecca and Fraser Issac

Rebecca & Fraser

Rebecca and Fraser will be married on October 8, 2011. The ceremony begins at 3 p.m. on our yard in Kleefeld, Manitoba. They have decided to take a chance on Mother Nature and have planned for an outdoor wedding, so we are hoping for a beautiful fall day. There should be an amazing backdrop for the event with all of the leaves changing colour. The trees will be gorgeous and the leaves that fall will provide us with an enchanting kaleidoscope carpet!

Let’s back up a few years and I will tell you how this all came to be.

Seven years ago, the Reimer Family decided to make the fateful move to Kleefeld, Manitoba from our long time home in Churchill. It was a heart wrenching move, as Churchill was the childhood home for five out of the six members of our family.

Our move came about fairly quickly, without a lot of time to find just the right home, so we moved into a tiny house on Hanover Road until we could find what we needed for our family. The family next door was the first to visit us and welcome us to our new home. And they had kids!

We became fast friends. Their eldest, a boy named Fraser, just happened to be the same age as our oldest daughter, Rebecca. Their daughter, Anja, a bubbly, friendly girl, soon spent many hours with our daughters. Fraser made it his mission to welcome the new girl in his grade and the two fast became a pair.

Rebecca and Fraser “hung out” for all of Grade 9 and most of Grade 10, back when Rebecca was still taller than him! By the end of Grade 10 their social circles were changing, we had moved to a new home down the road and their paths did not cross as much for a few years.

Fast forward three years and we found our daughter in college and living in Winnipeg with relatives and Fraser working in the city in between his university terms. They seemed to find time to start “hanging out” again and before we knew it, they had made it official and started dating. That was a year and half ago, and we are so pleased to have Fraser joining our family. He is literally the “boy next door”, but now MUCH taller than Rebecca, working on a college engineering degree and growing into a man of strong integrity who we have been proud to welcome into our lives.

As previously mentioned, Rebecca is our oldest daughter and just recently turned 21. She has grown up with Polar Bears at Seal River and fishing at North Knife Lake Lodge. She has been charged by a Polar Bear (fortunately when on the right side of the fence!), caught Manitoba Master angler fish and had a photo published in National Geographic Traveler. She has also spent countless hours snowmobiling with her family and friends, successfully hunted caribou and moose with her dad, been back up driver on Seal River ATV tours. She’s proven she can take on anything that’s thrown at her. Rebecca is thrilled to have found someone to share her love of the outdoors and adventure with. Fraser has embraced the north, but has also shown her the magic and beauty of the south.

Rebecca's photo appeared in National Geographic Traveler Magazine in a story about Churchill Wild's Seal River Heritage Lodge

We expect to see both of them making cameo appearances at the lodges over the next several years – if we can’t hook ‘em into some full time work!

Immediate future plans involve living in an apartment in Winnipeg while Fraser finishes the last year and a half of his education. From there, the possibilities are wide open!

You can read their engagement story and see their smiling faces on www.FraserandRebecca.com. Thanks for reading and sharing in our lives!

Pike Slayer Erickson and Trout Master Snodsmith both grab trophies on Opening Day 2011 at North Knife Lake Lodge

Trophy Lake Trout John Snodsmith opening day 2011 at North Knife Lake Lodge

Long time veterans of North Knife Lake Lodge, John Snodsmith and Jerry Erickson continue to rack up the Master Angler trophies while on their annual pilgrimage to monster fish heaven. These guys have caught thousands of Northern Pike and Lake Trout on North Knife Lake, yet they still get as excited over every fish as if it was their first, especially Jerry "The Pike Slayer" Erickson. "Trout Master" John has lost count of the Trophy Lakers he’s boated over the years but can always be "talked" into another. He landed a 40" "hawg" on the first morning out. Not to be outdone, Jerry followed up with a 42" Northern Pike. Nice going guys!

A New Member to the Webber’s Family

Kent Mitchie - Webber's Lodgesby Kent Michie

As of January 1, 2011, I am excited to announce that I have been asked to join the Webber’s Lodges family as their Sales & Operations Manager.  For the past two years I have worked as their head guide and caribou camp manager and I was honoured when asked if I would consider the position.

I have worked year round for the past 26 years as a professional guide throughout Canada and own and operate a taxidermy business, where I spend my time between guiding seasons.

Many of you have met me in the Webber’s Lodges Booths at various sports shows throughout the United States and Europe.  I have been traveling during January, February, and March to sports show events and have met many avid outdoorsmen interested in joining us for an Arctic Wilderness Adventure.  For those of you who did not meet me at a show, I invite you to contact me. I would be happy to discuss in detail what adventures we offer and how you can join us for your  trip of a lifetime.

With my experience and Webber’s Lodges legendary reputation in the industry I am confident that I will be a part of the family for a long, long time. So pick up the phone or pull up to the computer and get a hold of me.  Let’s see what I can do for you to help you fulfill your dream Canadian hunting or fishing trip!

North Knife Lake Lodge gets new state-of-the-art dock

Terri Smiling On North Knife LakeDuring my first week at North Knife Lake Lodge this spring, my girlfriend Terri came up to help open camp and to see where I work.  Although her stay was a short, it was enjoyable, and I am sure she will be joining me on many more trips to this beautiful northern wilderness.

When we arrived we found that several years of guide/guest traffic and severe spring ice flows had taken their toll on the old dock.  Lumber for a new dock had been brought in the previous winter, so with the help of fellow guide Damon we began building the new dock. The dock construction was completed in two phases.  Phase one required the building of four floating sections. Phase two was the finishing touches.

The log cribbing was rebuilt and stabilized with more rock. The overall size of the dock was increased to 8 feet wide by 130 feet long. New lightweight poly barrels were used as floats. The dock was constructed with metal corner brackets and steel pins that allow it to flex and pivot up and down without twisting, resulting in a smooth even walking surface without tripping hazards.

We now have a new and improved long-term dock!

Canadian Northern Pike Fishing Makes a Memorable Graduation Trip.

Grad Trip 09.jpgAfter graduating from Grade 12 you tend to lose contact with all your high school friends. Since my friends and I knew this was inevitable we started thinking up different grad trips that would be appealing and memorable.

We couldn’t have picked a better place then North Knife Lake Lodge. The camp itself was absolutely beautiful; the water was clear, the air was fresh, and the cabins were perfect for the eight of us.

Throughout our stay we had two boats to go fishing on, and we quickly found a favourite spot that produces excellent Northern Pike. It was amazing the amount of fish we could catch in a day; each boat would catch about 50 pike per day, and several Lake Trout. I myself am not one for a full day of fishing, but with a bunch of friends and fish always nibbling at your hook it turned out to be a great time. Besides fishing we played runway baseball, which is a typical baseball game, just on the runway with tires as your bases. We also managed to do a little bit of cliff jumping; we didn’t have to go far from the lodge, and the cliffs into the water were a good height for all of us. We also watched a ton of movies in the upstairs of the lodge after we ate a delicious supper. The food was always amazing and the staff was a hoot. If ever we weren’t up for a movie in the evening we all hopped into the wood fired hot tub to relax and talk until late into the evening.

Everything was so relaxed there and we soon felt right at home. By the end of our stay we were all incredibly sad to have to say goodbye. The time we spent together at North Knife will forever be remembered by each one of us. We have so many pictures of all of us together, so many stories that have forged a bond between each of us, each memory creates laughter and produces joy. I would strongly encourage any group of graduates to go and have an amazing, memorable time before jumping feet first into to real world. The lodge and staff made this trip an amazing event for us all.

I wouldn’t have wanted our time to be spent anywhere else.

Fishing in Canada (and feasting) Doesn’t Get Any Better Than This!

Manitoba Fishing - Delicious Shore lunch at North Knife Lake Lodge!Greetings from North Knife Lake Lodge!

Our 2009 fishing season is now just a cast away! It’s our latest start date ever due to ice conditions, but we’ll be well underway in a few days. Staff have arrived at the lodge and are busy getting ready for the season ahead. Part of that season includes Webber’s famous Shore Lunches.

There is nothing more spectacularly delicious than fresh-caught Northern Pike cooked over an open fire, fried potatoes, corn, beans, and Helen’s homemade bannock and cookies. With that in mind, yesterday we took some time out and did a shore-lunch "test run." *grin*

After a little over an hour of fishing in "Runway Creek" we came back with several Northern Pike and a few beautiful Lake Trout. Back at camp we got the fire going by the shore and moved our dining room down to the dock. We feasted like kings, while listening to Mike mumble, "Oh MAN, this is good!" between bites.

It was nice to take a few hours on a Sunday afternoon to enjoy our little slice of paradise before our season gets into high gear. So to all our past, present, and future clients of Webber’s Lodges,

Cheers to another great season ahead!

Fishing trips with kids provide a lifetime of special family memories from North Knife Lake in 2008

Big pike for Raynie on a family fishing trip to Webber's Lodges North Knife Lake Lodge.I’m sure most of you who have fished since an early age can vividly remember your first encounter with those underwater swimmers at the end of your fishing line. The childhood or mid-teen memories of casting a lure for the first time or going to that secret spot with Mom, Dad or Grandpa in search of the big one.

I personally remember, as a young kid, being picked up from school almost every afternoon by my father during the late spring or early fall, and I still recall the overwhelming anticipation I had knowing that we would be heading down to our favorite river to fish until dusk. These special memories hold a special level of excitement that every kid should have the opportunity to experience and enjoy – the first cast, the first fish, the quality time in the outdoors.

I have had the pleasure of working in the sport fishing industry for over 13 years now and have had countless angling experiences with kids coming to fish in northern Manitoba with their families. I always seem to be rewarded with an ear-to-ear grin from an eager youngster who has just caught the first, most, or biggest fish of their lives. I can honestly say that this particular feeling is nothing short of addictive.

Our family following at North Knife Lake Lodge has become quite diverse over the last few years. I feel that we are very fortunate to have such dedicated family customers who believe and focus on spending time in the outdoors and fishing with their kids. I truly believe that nothing educates more than positive outdoor experiences. Fishing in general allows our youth to enjoy something at their own pace; there are no overwhelming expectations to be met, and it’s an activity that encompasses many aspects of a positive outdoor experience or encounter.

The 2008 season brought many family-related success stories for those who included young kids in their fishing vacations to North Knife Lake Lodge. Big fish were often the most popular topic of conversation, with many impressive Master Angler size fish being caught by both first time and seasoned angling youngsters. But not far off were the tales of local sights and sounds: cow and calf moose, hovering eagles, howling wolves and the unforgettable sunsets that displayed colors unimaginable to some.

Fly fishing lessons, banana boat rides and evening walks down our winding sand trails were often the pinnacle of the young one’s outdoor adventure. I think
it really comes down to our youth having the opportunity to experience something different, something outside of everyday normal life – nature at its finest – readily available to experience and enjoy – unique opportunities that are a sure to develop and sustain lasting memories and a true appreciation for the simple things in life.

I would like to thank our customers for bringing their kids to North Knife Lake Lodge and giving them the opportunity to experience and enjoy a rare  angling and outdoor adventure. I hope that they enjoyed their time with us as much as we enjoyed having them. May they cherish those memories for many years to come and carry on the tradition in the future. And most importantly, always have fun!

This one’s for the kids…

Lodge Baroness Toni Morberg profiled in Travel Manitoba

Toni Morberg, Webber's LodgesSpotlight on Toni Morberg: Committed to quality

The future success of Manitoba’s tourism industry relies on its commitment to quality, according to Toni Morberg, owner of Webbers Lodges, a luxury hunting and fishing company located in northern Manitoba and Chair of Travel Manitoba’s Industry Advisory Committee for Outdoors.

“Developing industry standards are a necessity,” adds Toni. “Travellers are demanding quality and to stay competitive, that’s what the industry is going to have to provide.”

As Chair, Toni leads a group of tourism industry members as they discuss current and future marketing and development opportunities for the province and make recommendations on outdoor products to Travel Manitoba staff.

Developing quality and service standards for outdoor products is only one of many issues the committee has reviewed over the past year, which has also recommended enhancements to the Manitoba Master Angler Program, looked at growth strategies for hunting, discussed developing Aboriginal tourism products and looked at how to develop fly-fishing, ice-fishing and wildlife products.

“Being on the committee is a great opportunity,” adds Toni. “Not only do I get to trade ideas with other business owners, but as a group, we get to provide Travel Manitoba with the industry’s perspectives.”

Toni says she’s noticed a real change since the organization became a Crown corporation in 2005.

“It’s much more responsive to industry and through the advisory committees, the industry gets a chance to really participate in the development of tourism in Manitoba.”
