Hi Doug, What a surprise! Frank had run across a memorium in the FSNA newsletter. It was dated May 12, 2010. Thankfully I had no luck in tracking down Douglas Webber in obituaries. Just looking for Douglas Webber in Manitoba got me to your blogs about the trip made for the Ice Pilots TV show. Very interesting reading, lovely pictures. Sure nice to know that you are well and enjoying life so much. Remember the good old days in Churchill when we were trying to quit smoking. Neither of us made it then but now I have 17 years under my belt. Took the patch and a hacking cough to get me to make a serious attempt. Much easier than I thought it would be. We are old, getting grey(me) bald(Frank) and real stick-in-the-mud people, living in Morden and are the only ones on our crescent to have a garden. This year it was phenomenal and I was out every other day giving away tomatoes & cukes. All the best to you. Pat

You know what would be sad? It'd be sad to see the pike completely destroy this trout fishery. It's not sad to see the pike killed; they don't belong in Lake Davis. This article is being a bit biased as well. The author says that this is the "government's second attempt to trump mother nature..." Unfortunately for that comment, mother nature didn't bring the pike into the lake: people did. So the government is not trying to battle mother nature, but instead is trying to battle people who think it's ok to play with mother nature's original distribution of species.

You should add Joe's flies, elite series, gold/black, or gold/brown. Just do a slow retrieve, and pause for 2-3 seconds, and watch the fish jumping outta of the water. They work like a charm :D.

My best pike lure by far is a Northland Spinner bait (the safety pin style). Get the one with the black skirt and orange/black blades. Get either the 1/2 oz or the 3/4 oz lure. Then, put a trailer hook on with a 4 or 5 inch white trailer grub. I have caught most of my big pike on a Northland Spinner baits. The black skirt with silver blades works pretty well also. Again, put a trailer hook on with a white grub. These lures don't look like much and are fairly inexpensive, but they will catch fish. That is the ticket for catching pike anywhere.

A couple of suggestions from experience with these: 1) cut the runners to match and fasten used downhill skis for easiest pulling, countersink stainless deck screws for longevity; 2) tow from the end that folds on top so the wind doesn't get under the end and try to open up while towing (very hard on the canvas); 3) install clips, rails or lashing hooks on the upper (rear) part of the top end for carrying gear without having it fall off.
